A BIOGRAPHY: RICHARD LEE
As an artist, teacher and traveler, Richard's life
has been an adventure. Born in New York City, he moved shortly to a dairy farm
in upstate New York where he grew up. He left the countryside to attend college
and graduate school, majoring in philosophy. His interest in art grew and in
1959, he moved to New York City where he pursued artmaking. Living in his loft
on Canal Street, he painted, taught math at a private school, visited galleries
and museums, and attended art classes and lectures.
Throughout the years, he has summered in Mexico and exhibited throughout
the world, particularly in Maine during recent years. Richard has exhibited
work
at Portland Museum of Art, Farnsworth Art Museum, University of Maine at Presque
Isle, Hay Gallery, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, River Tree Arts Center,
Frank Brockman Gallery and Eleven Pleasant Street Center for the Arts, to name
a few. He also enjoys showing work in alternative spaces.
Richard uses his handmade paper to form collages, paper quilts, artists' books
and installations. He has taught workshops and residencies at his own studio
as well as at numerous schools, colleges and communities.
Travel is still one of his major pursuits. During the past five years, he has
traveled and made journals in Cuba, Mexico, Newfoundland, Guatemala, Peru,
Ecuador, Spain, Italy, India and Istanbul. Throughout his life, he lived five
years in
Afghanistan, two years in Greece and traveled throughout Europe and Central
Asia. Travel adds richness to his life and work.
Richard currently creates artwork in a studio on the second floor of the Ames
Mill in Richmond, Maine where his studio overlooks Swan Island and the beautiful
Kennebec River.
