My curiosity has led me to the world's distant and exotic corners...

I have created my art and taught in Afghanistan, Greece, Mexico and Maine. My art is a significant arrangement of things or words or movements that evoke a strong emotional response. My large works often invite people to step right into them. My current chosen medium is paper, which is very organic, intuitive and spiritual.

One visitor to my studio wrote, "Richard is a striking figure within his cavernous Brunswick loft studio. Way overhead, paper cylinders, like long, narrow Chinese lanterns, sway lazily from the ceiling pipes. Felt-like paper quilts and tapestries, rock compositions and watercolors make the enormous walls one big collage. Squares of fibery paper, each printed with primitive animal designs, swirls and zigzags, are draped on books, shelves chairs.....everything."

Workshops

In addition to creating artwork, I enjoy offering a variety of handmade papermaking workshops. My workshops vary from one-on-one art intensives, to small groups and entire school classrooms. Papermaking is a fascinating and fun means of creative expression for artists of all ages. See Richard's resume.

A Spiritual Journey

A few years ago I created angels out of handmade paper. This began a spiritual journey which was expressed with Native American images on papers. Some of these took the form of what I call "spirit papers." Each paper contains a special spirit or energy; some of these were tied together and hung as "spirit quilts."
